The A Level is assessed through four written papers. Two papers sit at AS Level and two sit at the full A Level stage. Each paper tests a different skill.

What is the paper structure for A Level Business 9609?

The 2026 to 2028 syllabus splits Business 9609 into four papers. AS Level students sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 only. Full A Level students sit all four.

Notice that business strategy is now embedded across all five A Level topics. You must apply strategic tools inside marketing, finance and operations answers too.

How do you write context-rich answers in Paper 3?

Paper 3 is a decision-making case study. Generic textbook answers score low. The marks live in the specific figures and facts inside the insert.

Quote the case company’s own data. Name its products, its revenue numbers and its market conditions. Every point must be tied back to that business.

For the 16 mark questions, structure each answer in clear stages. State the point, apply the case, analyse the effect, then judge how far it matters.

A simple structure for high mark questions

1. Make one clear point using a business theory.
2. Apply it directly to the case company and its figures.
3. Analyse the knock on effects for that business.
4. Evaluate: weigh it against another factor and conclude.

How should you approach the Paper 4 strategy essays?

Paper 4 has two case study essays worth 20 marks each. Both demand evaluation. A strong conclusion that makes a judgement is what separates an A from a C.

Plan before you write. Pick two or three strong arguments, apply each to the case, then decide which matters most and why. State that judgement clearly.

Use recognised strategic tools where they fit. Ansoff for growth direction, Porter for competitive position, force field analysis for managing change.

How many past papers should you solve for Business 9609?

Solve at least five to seven years of past papers for all four components. Business technique is a pattern. The more case studies you attempt, the faster your recall.
