How Does the Cambridge O Level Grading System Work?
Cambridge reports O Level results as letter grades, never as marks or percentages. The Cambridge O Level qualification runs from A star down to E. Below E, a result is reported as Ungraded.
Each grade stands for a band of marks, not a fixed score. Cambridge sets that boundary after every exam series, once all scripts worldwide are marked.
The same raw score can earn a B in one session and an A in the next. The boundaries move because some papers run harder than usual.
This is the part students most often misread. A grade reflects a standard of achievement, not a fixed percentage. Cambridge adjusts boundaries so that the standard each grade represents stays consistent year after year.
Older material that mentions grades F and G is out of date for the current scale. The grading system percentage conversion only applies to A star through E.
O Level Grading System Percentage: The IBCC Conversion Table

Read the A star row carefully, because it is where most self-calculations go wrong. A star is worth more than 90, not exactly 90. IBCC fixes a separate A star value for every subject in every session. Its own example uses 93 for English and 95 for Mathematics.

How Do You Calculate Your O Level Equivalence Marks?
The method is short once you have the right table. Work through it in four steps, using your Statement of Results rather than a predicted grade.
- List the subjects that count: eight for candidates inside Pakistan, five for candidates overseas.
- Convert each grade into IBCC marks, taking the A star value from your session list.
- Add the marks together, giving a total out of 800 for eight subjects.

Divide 618 by 800, and the result is 77.25 percent. That is the figure a merit list actually uses. It is roughly the average of your converted subject marks.
Online calculators differ on the total they show, whether 900, 1050, or 1100. The marks figure moves with that total, but the percentage does not. Trust the percentage on your issued certificate, not a third party tool.
What Is IBCC Equivalence and Why Does It Matter?
Pakistani colleges, universities, and government departments work in marks and percentages. A Cambridge letter grade tells them nothing they can place on a merit list.
The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen closes that gap. It converts foreign qualifications into local marks and issues an equivalence certificate. For O Level, that certificate declares your result equivalent to the Secondary School Certificate.
Admission offices then read your percentage exactly as they read a Matric result. This is not optional paperwork for local study. Most public sector institutions cannot process an application without the certificate beside your Cambridge results.
Students heading overseas sometimes assume the process skips them. Visa files and some foreign institutions still ask for a locally recognised percentage.
Which Subjects Does IBCC Require, and in Which Group?
The subject rules decide whether you qualify at all. Candidates sitting exams inside Pakistan must pass eight subjects, with a minimum grade of E in each. Five of those eight are fixed.
English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat, and Pakistan Studies are compulsory, and three electives sit alongside them. Candidates who sit their exams overseas need five subjects only. English and Mathematics stay compulsory, plus three electives.
Science Group or Arts Group
Here is the rule almost nobody explains before it is too late. Your three electives decide which group your equivalence certificate is issued in.

Anyone who misses the science conditions is placed in the arts group instead. So three business electives earn a valid certificate, but in the arts group. That result cannot be undone later without sitting more subjects.

How Do You Apply for the Equivalence Certificate?
Applications go through the IBCC portal, or in person at a regional office. Offices run in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, and Bahawalpur.
Gather every document before you open the form. An incomplete file is the usual reason an application stalls, and resubmitting costs weeks.

Fees and processing times sit on the IBCC portal and change from time to time. Confirm the requirement with your target university as well, since competitive programmes often add criteria above the IBCC percentage.
What Can You Do If Your Equivalence Percentage Is Low?
A weak result is rarely final, and this is where students give up too soon. O Level certifies each subject separately, and exams run twice a year. So one or two weak subjects can be re-entered next session while everything else stands. There is no need to repeat a full year.
Students outside a Cambridge school can enter individual subjects privately through the British Council. The improved grade then replaces the old one in your calculation.
Work out the arithmetic before choosing which subject to retake. Moving one subject from C to A adds 20 marks to your total. That single change can lift the final percentage more than you expect.
