Many Pakistani families say O Level for both boards. Only Cambridge offers a qualification called O Level, while Pearson Edexcel offers an International GCSE at the same stage.

One naming point clears up most of the confusion. There is no Edexcel O Level, so the fair comparison is Cambridge O Level against Edexcel International GCSE.

How do the name and grading differ?

Cambridge O Level is a Cambridge International qualification, graded A* to E. Edexcel International GCSE is the Pearson Edexcel qualification for the same stage. Since 2019 it has used a 9 to 1 grading scale instead of letters.

On the 9 to 1 scale, 9 is the top grade and sits above an old A*. Grade 1 is the lowest, with Ungraded below.

So a Cambridge report card shows letters, and an Edexcel one shows numbers. The two describe the same stage in a different style.

Linear or modular: how the exam routes differ

This is the one structural difference between the boards. Cambridge O Level is linear, so every paper is sat at the end of the course.

Edexcel International GCSE offers both linear and modular routes for selected subjects. In the modular route, units are examined at different points across the year, and results are banked.

The modular route suits a student who prefers spreading assessment across the year rather than sitting everything at once. It also lets a student retake a unit without redoing the whole subject.

Not every Edexcel subject runs the modular route, so check with the school which subjects offer it. Linear remains the default across both boards.

Does IBCC treat Cambridge and Edexcel the same?

IBCC recognises both under the same rules, but the conversion tables differ slightly since the grading scales differ.

A Cambridge C converts to 65 IBCC marks. An Edexcel grade 4 also converts to 60 marks, so the outcomes are comparable but not identical.

Subject requirements are the same. Candidates in Pakistan need eight passed subjects. Edexcel offers Pakistan Studies, Islamiyat, and Urdu, so an Edexcel student can meet the compulsory list.

Mixing boards on one certificate is not typical, but it is accepted. A student taking Cambridge for sciences and Edexcel for languages gets one IBCC certificate with both sets of subjects.

How do you sit each board in Pakistan?

Schools register students with their board and charge entry fees. Most Pakistani O Level schools use Cambridge, while Edexcel centers cluster in larger cities.

Private candidates register through the British Council Pakistan office. Both boards run two exam series a year: May/June and October/November.

Entry deadlines close well before exam papers are sat, so register early. Late entries incur extra fees.

Which board is better for your child?

For most families, the school has chosen. The board matters less than the quality of teaching at that school.
